Happy Birthday Martha!

Karen Magnuson and I visited Martha today and dropped of a birthday card from all of us at the D&C. I have to tell you, keep your prayers coming, it’s been a good day for her. She was very alert and responsive while we were there. We sang happy birthday with Linda and Mo as the chorus. She was looking at us singing, moving her head and shrugging her shoulders (Martha translation: ya’ll better keep your day jobs!) Then Karen mentioned something about the newsroom trending to hit budget in period 1, and she looked over and gave her a smile (or a smirk), we do believe it was a smirk (Martha translation: Chezus!). I talked a little about my hockey injury and she could care less. She actually rolled her eyes over towards the wall as I was speaking. (Martha translation: Are you kidding me Foges, does it really matter? Your team stunk up the ice pretty badly – just sayin’!) She’s right, we lost 9-3 anyway!

Her nurse came in a bit later to wash her up and told us, what we already experienced, she was having a great day. She was awake and alert for most of the morning. She’s moving her left arm pretty good, and her legs were moving a bit more than usual, since her sheets were all bunched up. We were actually noticing her legs moving too. She has a padded mit on her left hand, so she can’t hit her head to hard with her hand or pull any of her tubes out. She also mentioned that the physical therapist would be up in the afternoon to continue to work that right arm. All and all, progress is being made.

Idea: In honor of Martha’s birthday today, I thought it would be nice if everyone posted a funny story about Martha! Here’s a good one from Rochester -- Martha loves to dress up on Halloween (this is a BIG deal for her) and since I was born on mischief night, I also love Halloween. So when I arrived at the paper two years ago, I was surprised to see the VP of Finance dressed as the Budget Fairy – this outfit was precious -- Fairy wings (the whole 9 yards) Martha never does anything halfway. The one thing very unique about this costume was the string of money she used as a tail. When I asked about her $$$ tail, she referred to as “money coming out of her ass”. Had to share~

  2. No funny stories just memories of cakes and prsents; the best cakes, best presents because she'll tell you she was Dad's favorite. These days, Dave would have to help celebrate Martha's birthday for a week.

Martha loves to dress up for holidays like Halloween and St. Patrick's Day. You learn a lot about the luck of the Irish through the food and drink at her St. Patty's Day parties! May all of the luck of the world be with you, Birthday Girl!

  5. Actually, I kinda liked the Xena, warrior accountant, when she was in Delaware, I think. It was made of pleather. She wore a button down shirt under it at work, but not when the trick or treaters came to the house. Heard she had more trick or treaters than usual that year. ;-^

Happy Birthday darling Martha. Next year we will have a real celebration when you are dancing. We love you! (I'm thinking next year might be a birthday with a big "0" on the end.) :-)

  13. Here's my favorite:

Brontë was Little Red Riding Hood for a couple years in a row. And of course, Mom had created a Little Red Riding Hood cape for her!

Not to let anything to go waste, Mom decided to be Little Red Riding Ho.

She sported fishnets, stilettos, a short pleather skirt, and a peasant top. And of course, she had Brontë's cape.

To top off the outfit she carried a basket with ho-hos and condoms.

My other favorite would have to be Xena, Warrior Accountant. I'm pretty sure that costume is still around the house some where.

  19. I remember a time when Martha and I were in high school. One of our friends had been in a bad car accident and ended up in a body cast with compound fractures in at least one leg. Somehow, we got the bright idea that Barb needed to go to the beach. Martha and I and a few others loaded her onto a rolling chaise lounge, got her down the stairs from the second story of her house, and rolled her into the back of my parents station wagon. From there, we drove to Hamlin Beach and rolled Barb out of the back of the station wagon, over the grass, and out onto beach! I think Barb had sand in cast for weeks after that adventure. Of course, we had to reverse the process to get Barb back home. I remember at some point during this process, Martha and I looking at each other and saying, "who had this bright idea??"

Martha used to walk into my office for the month-end finance recap and the conversation would typically go something like this:

"Hey boss, do you want to hear some happy horseshit or do you want the truth so I can run out of here quickly?"

Martha, you're one of a kind. Happy B-day (all week long)!
