December 30th update

We are beginning to put together schedules with friends so that someone is with Martha most of the day and Dave (her husband) has time to rest and tend to other things. The Physical Therapist explained that Martha's brain is unable to tell her right arm and leg to relax. She showed us how to exercise her arm and leg to help relax the muscles and to keep the muscles moving so that when she is able to move them they will be able to work. Martha is able to answer question by shaking her head for yes and no. However, when asked to raise her left hand and put up 2 fingers she can raise her hand but it was a fist. So the message is is not getting through even though she looks like she is trying to do what she is asked to do. We watched tv today. Kept the TV on the food network. Little by little the therapists and Dr.s are trying to find out just how much damage has been done.
Her heart Dr said today she will probably be in ICU for maybe 1 more day and then she would be moved to the neurological rehab area in the hospital.

  1. Chloe DeShong:Back in Asheville and in my cozy apartment. Mom Update! Speech therapist and physical therapist have both been to see her now. Still too early to know how much damage has been done to her brain. But she has good enough sense to nod her head that she wanted me to go back to work. Taking it one day at a time, starting with work in the morning. :)

  2. from Brote DeShong: I've decided to be Mom for now on. She's not able to, and I'm the only human woman in the house, so... I cooked Daddy dinner, turned on all the lights, turned on his newsprogram and offered him his drink. Yeah yeah yeah, I know I'm becoming a house wife. But hey, the family needs one!

  3. Janet Hahn-Hasson While I can't be there in person to help....just know I am there in spirit and have faith that Martha will rise again to cook and yell out four letter words!
